Originally from St Anne's PB, another community that fell victim to the recentralization program, and later of Freshwater, PB. I have been away for the last 40 years, 30 of them in the army and am now biding time (not living) in Ottawa. We have one more move to make, home in a couple of years. Wonderful picture gallery!! My wife and I stopped briefly in Fredericton on our honeymoon in Aug of '71. We were headed to Nova Scotia. Makes me wish that we had spent more time in your neck of the woods. Memorable story about Fredericton, we were nearly to Fredericton, coming from Quebec City in the middle of the night. Light drizzle was falling. Passed what I thought was a bundle of rags on the berm of the road. My wife said, No, there was person lying there. I turned around and sure enough there was a guy lying on the side of the road next to a high wall of tiered concrete. I was apprehensive, in the US this could be a set up. Got the person into our VW Bus and took them to the hospital in Fredericton. At one point I thought the person had passed away since eyes were open but no movement. Flicked an eyelash and got a blink, Thank God!! Head Nurse thought I was responsible for the problem that this WOMAN!! was having. When my wife stepped out from behind the examination room door the Nurse calmed down. This person was not a guy (but rough enough looking to give that appearance). She apparently was a 'night time working woman' from the reservation and had been rolled out of someone's car. Rose and I spent the night in Fredericton in a small cottage motel and left (very early) the next morning. Had I known that Fredericton was such a lovely place we may have stayed over a bit. But all we wanted to do was get the heck out of there!

When one of my Albertan friends ask me what St. John's is like I always refer them to this wonderful site because it is without a doubt the most recognized website here in Alberta for us Newfoundlanders so far away from home. Hi! Thank you for a great site and fab' photos. I must correct you though on the title of 2 of your photos. 'Joey's Horse' is an error. The horse in question sits on a lookout on Russwood Farm on Roaches Line,near Brigus. It was purchased and errected by the Russell Family in 1974 in honour of E.J. Russell who was the principal owner of the farm, and my Uncle. My Uncle was the Son-in-Law of 'Joey'and that was Mr Smallwoods only connection to the horse. The present horse is the 2nd one to grace the lookout. My Uncle Ed Russell also purchased the first one which was destroyed in a winter storm. Ed Russell passed away in 1973,

I left St.John's when i was only 10, and boy do i ever miss it. The ship picture you posted on the Photography page is the U.S. Coast Guard ship, the Bark Eagle. It is a training ship for new guardsmen. Only active commissioned sailing vessel in U.S. maritime service. Was taken from Hitler in 1946. Was built in 1936 to train German navy cadets. Now stationed in New London, CT

My husband and I visited your Island after hearing raves from the person staying next to us at a motel in New Brunswick. Decided to give it a look-see. ended up falling in love with it. I feel like a Newfie. I yearn to return. The people there were so gracious. A man gave us directions for 5 minutes to a waterfall. After we drove away, my husband and I both laughed because we didn't understand a word he said. We did understand everyone else. The hospitality was wonderful. The lighthouse keeper and his assistant helped us with car trouble after we ended up there with a hole in our trans. pan. Everyone, everywhere we went was absolutely wonderful. The scenery was out of this world. Stumbled on your site while googling lighthouses in Newfoundland. Disappointed not to see Rose Blanche. It was so unusual. Anyway, everytime I think of Newfoundland, I miss it like a native. Your pictures are wonderful. Thank you so much for taking me "home" again.

I'm from Reidville NL and I would just like to say that the pic. of the insectarium is nice. But it is NOT the Deer Lake insectarium it is the Reidville insectarium. It was the reidville town councils land and they are the ones who had it built. I am very proud to be from reidville and i am proud of the insectarium. Nine members of my husband's family visited St. John's in August. My mother-in-law was from there and my 86 yr. old father-in-law wanted to visit "one more time"(he was stationed there for 3.5 yrs. during WWII). When we visited the Rock in 1996, we were looking for a "stone" lighthouse that was in Rose Blanche, which was supposed to be 40 k from Port a Basque. Well, we started driving, up hill, downhill and it seemed like we went every direction and never seeming to get there. It's a great site which highlights many beautiful things about St. John's and other parts of the province but one the things I didn't find on the site was anything about the Basilica, which I think of as another major part of the St. John's attractions...I was just wondering if it was because of the work getting done on it or if there's some other reason to not have any picture or references to that wonderful landmark and bit of history?

Karen, Enjoyed your boat photo. In the '80's I was in St. Johns with the US AirForce over night. We could see the harbor from our hotel, and that was quite a sight to behold in itself. Very beautiful there.

Your site is wonderful. It brought tears to my eyes. We left Newfoundland 6 years ago for Sault Ste Marie, ON. There is nothing anywhere that can compare to home. Your web page is amazing!! I moved to Ontario two years ago but I go back home often. All your pictures are great, but I love the bergs. I left Windsor, Nfld, in 1968 and joined the RCAF and worked as a Military Policeman until I retired in 1989. I now reside in Edmonton, AB. I am planning a trip home this summer. I love everything about the rock. I find the longer you have been away the better you appreciate the people and the culture. I happened to come across your web site and the story about Kenny's Pond. My mother used to skate on Kenny's Pond in the winter! She grew up on Portugal Cove Road, and she also knew the Kenny family, who she told me had a dairy and vegetable farm. Just finished reading the Blue Lantern by L.M. Montgomery, my first fav author. Have read many of the authors you mentioned. If you like Mary Higgins Clark try Joy Fielding, just as good. (Sounds like the other person who signed before me!!) Great website! Surfed in by accident looking for history bits and was indeed pleased to see how you've added the fascinating history of Newfoundland on your personal web page. Your photos are great too. We spent 2 weeks in early August, camping in Gros Morne National Park. It was our best vacation EVER and we have fond memories of Squires Memorial Park, where we watched salmon leaping over the falls. Deer Lake is a great city and I hope you still get to visit sometimes.
